Poetic License | YANG Shuangqing & CHENG Peng
September 2017 marks Telescope’s five-year anniversary in Beijing and our first exhibition of the fall season with two artists in their Beijing solo gallery debuts: Yang Shuangqing from Xi’an, and Beijing based Cheng Peng.
Yang Shuangqing’s installation is comprised of works on paper, canvas, board and multiple video shorts. Yang states that painting for him is affected by the weather-like emotions of life, local and world events, dreams, technology, religions, memory, etc. Questions of life and death, desire, fluctuating states of emotion, these are the things he is concerned with and pursues as he paints. Like the wind, it is difficult to explain where his work comes from and where it will end, and having a concrete answer or image is not his intent or objective. “I strive to be honest in what I say and how I say it and hope that through that sincerity people will begin to see and to understand.”
YANG Shuangqing, born in Xi’an in 1982, graduated from Xi’an Academy of Fine Arts, now works and lives in Xi’an. Past solo exhibitions include: Yang Shuangqing & Cheng Peng, Telescope, Beijing(2017); Five Tastes Crossing, OCAT, Xi’an(2016); A Song of An Autumn Midnight, Michael Ku Gallery, Taipei(2013). Selected group exhibitions include: Switch, Xi’an Contemporary Art Museum, Xi’an(2014); One Man Theater, He Xiangning Art Museum, Shenzhen(2011); Fragmentation, Chen Ling Hui Contemporary Art Space, Beijing(2007) etc.
Cheng Peng’s Mire in the Gravel Road is an installation made up of 80 small black and white works on paper and is inspired from his readings of “Paris Spleen,” a collection of poems by Charles Baudelaire. Almost all of these works correspond to specific literary images in the book. Cheng presents the subjects of Baudelaire’s prose, now out of time, as living abstractions thrown into modern life that continue to evolve in new and different directions. Cheng has installed his drawings in groupings from floor to ceiling making his own visual prose that surrounds the viewer in a dynamic dialogue that resonates around the room and off the walls.
CHENG Peng, born in Shandong province, China in 1987, graduated from Central Academy of Fine Arts, M.A. degree, Beijing, and graduated from Shandong University of Arts, B.A. degree, Shandong, now works and lives in Beijing. Selected exhibitions include: Yang Shuangqing & Cheng Peng, Telescope, Beijing(2017); Ecological Survey “Polyphony” II Chinese Art, AMNUA, Nanjing(2014); the First CAFA Future, CAFA Art Museum, Beijing(2012); 2012 Master Exhibition of Central Academy of Fine Arts, CAFA Art Museum, Beijing(2012); Shandong Youth Biennial, Eastern Modern Art Gallery, Jinan(2008) etc.
