GAO YUAN Lunar Dial
Gao Yuan’s animation work, Lunar Dial, was realized over a period of six years (2010 - 2016) using her paintings to stage a shadowy and strange animated narrative.
Each scene from the film, like in one-act plays, has specific imagery and actions but the overall narrative is fluid and intuitive. Each individual scene is not necessarily related to or in chronological order with the previous scenes it is juxtaposed with but is connected through rhythm, spacing, sounds, and silence. This creates a distant familiarity like that in memory and dream. The title, Lunar Dial, was chosen for its reference to moonlight, shadowy imprecision, time, and dream sense. A lunar dial, like a sundial, is an ancient device for measuring time, but is dependent on the moonlight for its mechanisms. Lunar Dial was nominated for the Tiger Award for Short Films at the 2017 Rotterdam International Film Festival and received a Special Mention of the Jury at the CutOut Fest International Animation and Digital Art Festival in 2016.
Audio for Lunar Dial is by Anita Pan
Gao Yuan was born in 1986 in Kunming, Yunnan, received her BFA in animation arts at the Communication University of China, Beijing. She is represented by Capsule Shanghai, Shanghai China.
HENRY COOMBES I Am The Architect
Henry Coombes was born in London in 1977, graduated in Fine Art at Glasgow School of Art in 2002 and is now based in Glasgow, Scotland.
I am the Architect, this is not Happening, this is Unacceptable, is the longer title of his 2012 film, where an architect builds a model of a Utopian city. His designs and aspirations, and his rigid adherence to modernist rules are pitted against individual expression and modern technology. In the end his frustration and the malfunctioning tablet pull him down into a parallel universe of his architectural model, a descent into madness, where he meets its inhabitants.
Coombes has exhibited his films and drawings and paintings around the world in museums, galleries, and film festivals including, the Hammer Museum, Los Angeles, the 52nd Venice Biennale, 2007, the Sydney Biennale, Australia 2014, London Short Film Festival, Edinburgh International Film Festival, and the 2015 Changjiang International Photography and Video Biennale, Chongqing, China, where he won the Silver Award for best video.
