Oliver Herring
Nov. 8, 2014 – Jan. 4, 2015
Oliver Herring was born in Germany and now lives and works in New York. He is an internationally acclaimed artist who has been featured in international art magazines and exhibited in major museums and galleries around the world, such as the Museum of Modern Art and the New Museum of Contemporary Art, New York, Aichi Triennale 2010, Nagoya, Japan, Victoria and Albert Museum, London, Zacheta National Gallery of Art, Warsaw, Poland, 10th Lyon Biennale of Contemporary Art, Lyon, France, Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Milan, Italy, among others.
Oliver Herring is an independent soul that travels the world making his work in various institutional and non-institutional locations. His independent creative process of art making is highly dependent upon the unknown, the new, the stranger, and friends. He is like a mad conductor of an orchestra or a siren on a cliff over looking a city of people passing by. But he needs people; old, young, artist, student, common, or not, it doesn’t really matter. He is looking for souls that are willing to let go and allow him, a seasoned guide, to lead them into some mysterious, fun, and creative adventures. Once the people are in place and the process has started it takes on a life of its own and has the potential of producing magnificent results, not only in art objects, but also in lives changed. His work is about relationships and how different interactions will always produce different and unforeseen results. Herring’s work is all about the process; how can one become a ‘bird’ and to fly high over the ruts and routines of life into the freedom of the sky. This is his wild art.
Herring comes to Telescope for a residency where he will start with basically nothing; an empty gallery, some ideas, a few materials, some volunteers, and will start a month long process of making friends with strangers and making art out of these relationships. In the past Herring has staged performance works photographing people, printing the photos, then cutting them up, superimposing the pieces on top of one another, cutting holes, tearing, making masks, forging new identities out of the simple individual portraits. Other performances will have one or two “models” stand on pedestals while other people begin attaching aluminum foil to their bodies. Foil can be added but never taken away. After time a new creature is born out of a collective creative consciousness. The results are transferred to a carved mannequin to be preserved as a finished sculpture. Spitting colored water by participating volunteers onto the faces and bodies of other participants, or onto the walls and floors of a space is another Herring performance he is quite famous for. Harmless food color dyes in water are used to create dazzling arrays of rainbow colors as people spray from their mouths streams of water and mist into the air. It is a breathtaking, intimate, childlike, and hilarious performance. The results are fantastic. One must see this to believe it. Herring videotapes all of his processes and photographs the results. These videos and photos will be on view at Telescope as they are produced and then remain for a month after his residency ends in December. These are samples of Herrings works, but who knows what all will happen once the games begin November 8. Come and participate, come and enjoy…
